CHRYSTAL RIMMER
RURAL
Spiral Gallery
Bega 2017
Rural is an exploration of the dichotomies of natural and synthetic environments. I explore the clash of organic and inorganic landscapes and question our relation to them as habitat.
I am focused on the sensations evoked by particular landscapes; in this case those of extreme juxtaposition within the urban and rural landscapes of Australia. My intention is to replicate these sensations through an exploration of gesture, rhythm, material and an individual visual vocabulary. My practice takes inspiration from Suprematist Kasimir Malevich, and Romantic J. M. W. Turner who use sensation as preference over representation. And Mario Merz, a key figure in the Arte Povera movement, obsessed with algorithms in nature and fascinated with the material and metaphorical qualities of natural objects
